Taisho – Risshu- End of summer -

We do not know what we do under a burning sun.
This time of the year is called “Taisho”, extreme heat.
The 15 days from 23 July under the solar calendar is really the highest point of heat.
People in ancient days set Risshu “beginning of autumn” after this extreme heat.
The heat is still severe, but after this period, the heat starts to calm down.
Now the highest point of heat is in this season as well.
We will see how people in old days feel seasons by them setting this season as the turning point of heat.

On the day of beginning of autumn
It is a fact that autumn is here
Though to the eye it is still not quite apparent,
With the sound of the wind, I suddenly become aware

I do not be able to see the autumn is here clearly but I suddenly realise it is here with the sound of wind.

People says “on calendar” quite often.
24 solar term such as Taisho (Extreme heat) and Risshu (Beginning of autumn) is based on the move of sun.
That is why it matches with the new calendar (The Gregorian calendar).
There are difference in how we feel seasons and also a gap between the new calendar and the old one, the luni-solar calendar.
These encourage the confusion of seasons between now and old days.

23 July this year is 1 June in the old calendar.
This gap is the biggest one in these 10 years.
1 June in the old calendar is the beginning of mountain season of Mt. Fuji and people climbed Mt.Fuji to visit Asama shrine on the top of the mountain.
While climbing, people chanted “Purification of the six roots of perception, and the mountain is clear”.

Cuisine in the high summer, Kashiwaya is preparing dishes expressing the middle of summer to purify six roots of perception, 5 senses and consciousness.
