Daikan-Risshun- Early, superficial indications of spring, yet to be bitterly cold -

Season is now in Daikan (Greater Cold) and biting cold days still continue.
I see morning air is very clear and can find mountains in a far more clearly than usual.
The scene is still a wintry scene and makes me think spring is far away even now.
I rub my hands and breathe a fog out.

Written when the first day of spring came within the old year.
spring is here before year's end when New Year's Day has not yet come around
what should we call it is it still last year or is it this
(Ariwara no Motokata, Kokinwakashu)

Before a new year come, spring is here…
should I call this year or last year?

The new year, according to the lunar calendar, generally begins in solar February or March.
Thus, the first signs of spring, or the solar-calendar first day of spring, sometimes occurred before the first day of the First Lunar Month.
This happened quite often in old days.
There are various interpretations for this poem, but to me, it expresses the pleasure of arrival of spring which people long for by having the day of risshun (Beginning of spring) before the new year day.
This year, the day of risshun is 19 December in the old lunar calendar.
As this poem expresses, we are having the beginning of spring before the new year day.

If you carefully look, you may be able to find buds are swelling on the top of tree which dropped leaves in autumn.
