Minor Snow(小雪)-Major Snow(大雪)- Shen-nong Festival -

In Osaka, Sukuna-Hikona Shrine located in Dosho-machi(道修町), main part of Osaka,
conducts the Shen-nong Festival on 22 and 23 November.
There is the saying, “Festivals in Osaka start with Ebisu and end with the Shen-nong Festival.”
As the saying says, the Shen-nong Festival is the final festival in the year.

Dosho-machi has developed as the pharmacy town since Edo period, and now there are many major drug company in Japan.
In this businessdistrict, Sukuna-Hiko Shrine is located quietly between company buildings.
During the festival, many people gather to the shrine to worship. Also, the street around it is crowded with people to enjoy rows of stalls.

The Shen-nong Festival has been hold since 1822.
In 1822, cholera epidemic has caused the pharmacies in Dosho-machi to make together pellet,
“koto-sakkiu-oen,” as a medicine to protect against diseases.

These pellets were prayed with “holy tiger (A papier-mâché tiger)” in shrine and were given out.
The festival is derived from this story.
At the entrance of Kashiwaya, the holy tiger(A papier-mâché tiger) decorated with bamboo leaves and an amulet from
Sukuna-Hiko shrine to hope our guests’ good health and safety of their family.

After the Shen-nong festival, the next event is “Koto-hajime” on 8 December. In Japan,
“Koto-hajime” is the first day to start preparing for New Years.

Finally, it is the time to enjoy almost all seasonal food in the winter.
Crab, yellowtail and vegetables become more delicious and sweeter in the strictly cold temperature.
