The Coming of SpringFrom Usui (19 February〜5 March)
to Awakening of insects (6〜20 March)

It was raining on the morning of 19 February. When I went outside, it was drizzling gently. It was still chilly; however, the rain did not turn to snow.I felt like the scent of strictly cold was hidden.

In Japan, there are 24 solar terms expressing the change of the season in the traditional calendar. According to them, there is a term, “Usui,” representing the period from 19 February to 5 March. The term, “Usui,” explains the season turning from snow to rain due to getting less cold.

The misty rain which seems like announcing the end of winter has melted ice and snow and moistened the ground gradually. While snowing, the things under the ground prepared for the beginning of the spring, and now, has started activities. From the ground which got the moisture back, it will not be long before the buds sprout. The bare branches of cherry and maple tree get strained to the sly and look somewhat red, and it seems to store the power to sprout new buds.

I think the word, “Usui,” has a sense of joy for the arrival of spring. The beautiful spring in Japan is just around the corner.
