“Onna Shogatsu(女正月)”〜 Shokan(小寒)

The New Year starts, and it is now the second year of Reiwa era. In Japan, January is called “Shogatsu,” and thought to be a special month; in particular, January 1st, “Gantan,” is a very important day. On the day, in order to give a pleasant welcome to Toshigami (a Shinto god), people decorate their house with special decorations: kadomatsu in front of their entrance, and shimenawa at their door. For the first seven days of the year called “oshogatsu,” the various New Year’s events are held.

On the other hand, “koshougatsu” is referred to as a three-day period around January 15th. During the period, kadomatsu and shimenawa are burned, and it is said that Toshigami goes back to there home with the smoke. Koshogatsu also has a number of events: eating rice porridge with red beans and decorating mochi-bana which is willow branches with red and white mochi. By eating porridge, people wish for health and a long life because the red color of the bean is said to drive away evil. Mochi-bana’s red mochi is used to resemble a cherry blossom which is a flower for the pre-celebration of agricultural god; white mochi is made to look like rice. As described, we have the custom to play for a good harvest.

Koshogatsu is also called “onna shogatsu.” Onna means a lady, and this expression shows sincere gratitude to ladies who work hard for New Year’s events and the feeling of wanting them to take some rest.

Kashiwaya will be served a dish made to look like mochi-bana. We prepare it with hope for a prosperous year. By the way, this is the year of the rat, which symbolizes prosperity. This year is auspicious because it is the first year of the Japanese zodiac once every twelve years. The fact that the first New Year in Reiwa is the year of the rat also makes us good fortune.

We hope that you will have a wonderful year.

I hear that the winter sea is swelling and the tide is cold.
Thank you for your kind understanding.
