“Hana Goshirae”From Usui(2/19~) to Keichitsu(~3/19)

“Shuni-e” is held at Nigatsu-do, Todai-ji. This traditional event is also known as “Omizutori” and tells ancient Nara that spring had arrived. Shuni-e is famous for the flaming torches of hongyo(main event) starting from March 1. Before hongyo, there is a previous event, “bekka.” These events are performed by a select group of eleven monks called “rengyoshu” who train their mind and body for a half month before hongyo starts. During the bekka, they spend with a special fire made with flint instead of general fire. Because of that, the previous event is called “bekka (literally other fire).”

During the bekka, on February 23, rengyoshu make artificial camellia flowers to offer them before the eleven-faced Kannon Bodhisattva at Nigatsu-do. This custom is called “hana goshirae (literally making flower).” I had an opportunity to see it one time before. The camellia flowers are made of 3 kinds of Japanese paper: red one dyed with safflower, yellow one dyed with gardenia, and undyed white one. Rengyoshu use red paper and white paper for petals, and yellow paper with a lengthwise cut for its center. Then, they wrap the Japanese angelica tree which is cut into a pentagon in yellow paper. Finally, red and white papers are alternately pasted on yellow paper and the camellia flower has been completed. As these flowers are prepared for hongyo in a calm atmosphere, rengyoshu also prepare their mind and body. The 500 camellia flowers in the lacquer tub looked shining to me.

There are many cuisines which tell you the coming of the season. Particularly, the cuisine for the arrival of spring leaves a strong impression because everyone looks forward to spring. There are aralia sprouts, bracken, young burdock, bamboo shoot, icefish, and greenling. In Osaka, young burdock is a representative spring food. Please enjoy the arrival of spring at Kashiwaya.

It is time to feel the sign of spring.
