Mild Autumn DayFrom start of winter (Ritto)

Waking up in the morning, I leave my bedroom. In the hallway to the sink, I find soft and weak sunlight on the floor. It might be because the sun has begun to rise later. I feel the approaching winter by seeing not strong sunlight at dawn. The water to wash my face seems to be colder than yesterday.

According to the news report, the first winter wind of the year blew in the Kinki region on October 24. It was 12 days earlier than last year. We called the wind “Kogarashi” which blew from north from mid-October to mid-November. The wind from the Asian continent brings moist and make rain and snow happen on the western side of Japan. Through the mountains, the wind changed into dry air and blew to the Pacific side. Since Japanese people thought the wind blowing away leaves seemed to wither the trees, they named the wind “Ko(=tree)” “Garashi(=wither)”.

October at the old calendar was aslo called “Koharu(literary, small spring)”. While the “Kogarashi” blows, the weather is sometimes calm. Even though old people knew the long and harsh winter were coming, they are looking forward to the nice spring sunshine by feeling the calm weather before winter. That is why they called these season “Koharu”. In addition, I feel that there are the time to decide to face the harsh winter.

Since it is the time to be able to prepare the winter ingredients, Kashiwaya changes our dishes and atmosphere for winter. We are welcoming our guests with winter dishes.

It is time to feel the sign of spring.
