“Shukuki”Lesser Cold

Shukuki (淑気)” expresses the New Year with full of auspicious sign. Under the COVID-19 pandemic, I purposely chosen the word with a wish.

After January 7th, it seemed like New Year’s Day had finished. However, things does not return to normal this year. There has been an incrase in the number of people infected with COVID-19 instead of a decrease. Even though we can get back to normal life, “new normal” are required under the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a time to stay patient, and it might be good oppotunity to look back everyday life.

On January 7th, Japanese people is in the habit of eating the seven herb rice porridge. Around this time, we realize that the days have gotten longer. I realize the New Year is begining by feeling brighter atmosphere compared to the winter solstice. January 7th is the day of the latest sunrise and the sun rises at 7:06am in Osaka. The sun sets at 5:07pm and it is 20 minuites later than the ealiest sunset day. This “20 minuites” shows us two contrasting sides: one is that the sunlight is getting weaker and the world seems to be dominated by darkness; other is that, even in the sever winter, the sunlight is slightly getting stronger day by day, and the spring seems to be approaching.

Although there are no sign of containing the spread of COVID-19, we, Kashiwaya, believe there is a hope after overcoming the situation.

We hope things get back to normal as soon as possible and everyone will remain in good health.

The contents may depending on the day’s stocks.
Thank you for your kind understanding.
