Greeting “Matsu-sugi” After the Pine Decorations

“Matsu-sugi” refers to the brief period after Matsu-no-uchi has ended, when the pine and sacred rope decorations are taken down and daily life quietly resumes. In the Kansai region, this time begins after January 15 and lasts for a short while thereafter.

While the days from New Year’s Day are known as Ōshōgatsu, January 15—or the three days centered around it—is called Koshōgatsu, the “Little New Year.” On this occasion, fire festivals known as Sagichō or Dondoyaki are held, during which New Year’s decorations such as kadomatsu and shimenawa are burned. It is said that the deities of the New Year, as well as the ancestral spirits who returned home during the holidays, depart once more, carried away in the rising smoke of these fires.
Decorations such as mochibana and mayudama were also traditionally displayed at Koshōgatsu as prayers for a bountiful harvest, a symbolic pre-celebration of agricultural abundance.

With wishes for a year filled with rich blessings for our guests, and with heartfelt gratitude, we have prepared mochibana and placed it at our entrance.

As I count each grain of sand along the vast seashore,
may they become the countless years of your long life.

No matter how many years pass, may we always cherish a heart that holds kindness and compassion for others.
