Greeting “The Arrival of Spring” From Spring Equinox to Pure Brightness*

Though the calendar has already turned to spring, the days have remained rather cold. At last, however, the air begins to soften, and we find ourselves stepping outside in lighter clothing. A calm and unhurried atmosphere gently fills the world, bringing with it the quiet charm of this peaceful season.

Around the time of the Spring Equinox, one of the traditional Seventy-two Microseasons is known as “Thunder Begins to Resound,” a moment that signals the stirring of spring. At the same time, the cherry blossom front slowly moves northward across Japan. Each announcement of blossoms coming into bloom brings a quiet excitement to the hearts of many.

Yononaka ni Taete sakura no Nakariseba
Haru no kokoro ha Nodoke karamashi
Written by Ariwara no Narihira

Meaning : If in this world there were no cherry blossoms at all, how calm our hearts might be when spring arrives.

This poem reveals the deep feelings that people of old held toward cherry blossoms. Within it, we sense a Japanese sensibility that remains unchanged even today.

Yet the season of blossoms never lingers for long. Before we realize it, late spring quietly passes by. Among the traditional microseasons, there are those that mark arrival—“Swallows Return”—and those that mark departure—“Wild Geese Fly North.” In this gentle cycle of coming and going, the days of spring slip softly away.

With this in mind, we hope to savor the final moments of spring to their fullest, leaving nothing of the season unappreciated.

*Spring Equinox(春分)/ Pure Brightness(清明): The traditional East Asian calendars divide a year into 24 solar terms. “Spring Equinox” starts on March 20th . “Pure Brightness” starts on April 5th.
