春一番の知らせを耳にするころになると夜明けも早くなり、
日も随分高くまで上がるようになります。
昼間の明るさが一層増し、春の光が満ちてくる様子は心を弾ませてくれます。
今年は尾を引くように厳しい寒さが続きますが、
春はゆっくりと、しかし確かに歩みを進めています。

二十四節気の「雨水(うすい)」は、寒さも緩み雪が雨に変わる頃を表しています。
「雨水」の初候に「土脉潤起(つちのしょううるおいおこる)」とあります。
冬に別れを告げるかのような、しっとりとした雨が降り、
氷雪を解かし凍てつく大地を徐々に潤していきます。
雪降る中、土の下で静かに春の準備をしていたものたちが、もうじき活動を始めます。
潤いを取り戻した大地からは、そろそろ草木の芽が萌え出ずることでしょう。

「雨水」という言葉には、
待ちわびた春の到来を歓ぶ気持ちが込められているように思います。

洋の東西に関わらず季節の変化が重要なことに違いは無いように思えますが、
その受け止め様となると些か違いがあるように考えます。
季節の変化に太陽の運行が大きく関わっていますが、
その中でも「特別な日」が四つあります。
それは「二至二分(にしにぶん)」つまり昼が一番短い冬至と昼が一番長い夏至、
昼と夜の長さが同じになる春分と秋分になります。
日本人はそれぞれを春夏秋冬の中心とし、
その中間点の「四立(しりゅう)」立春、立夏、立秋、立冬を季節の起点と位置づけました。
暑さ寒さも大体ひと月半ほどずれていますから、
まさに一番厳しい寒さの時に「立春」、猛暑の頃に「立秋」となり、
気候が穏やかになる頃「立夏」「立冬」を迎えます。

穏やかな季節に向かうことを喜び、
また厳しい季節を迎える準備を調えることを大事にしていたように思えます。
世界でも珍しい日本の四季折々の多様な変化が日本の心を育んでくれたのかもしれません。

When the first strong southern wind of the year blows, the sun rises earlier and much higher in the sky.  Bright spring sunlight reaches and comforts our hearts with the scent of spring spreading in the air.  Thus the weather continues to be cold this year, spring is slowly but surely approaching.

“Rain water*” is the time when the cold lets up and the snow turns into rain.  At the beginning of “rain water,” there is a saying “Tsuchi-no-shou uruoi kōru.”  It means the rain has been thawing snow and ice gradually and watering the earth, leaving the winter behind.  The living things underneath the ground sense the coming of spring and start preparing to come out to the fresh air.  You will soon see the buds sprouting out of the surface.

“Rain water” reminds me of having joy for the arrival of spring.  The change of seasons is important regardless of region, but people seem to develop slightly different impressions and feelings towards this change.

The movement of the sun is heavily involved in the seasonal change, and there are a total of 4 special days in a year: two equinox days and two solstice days.  The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year, on the other hand, the summer solstice is the longest day.  On the vernal equinox and the autumnal equinox, the length of daytime and nighttime becomes the same.

Japanese people set these four days as the center of each season and one and half months before each day as the beginning of each season. Therefore, the start of spring is the coldest day, and the first day of autumn is the hottest day.  The start of summer and winter is the time when the climate is pleasant.

I assume that Japanese people back then were delighted by the mild climate and they valued the importance of preparing for the upcoming harsh weather.  The various seasonal changes underlie the Japanese mind.

*Rain Water/ Insects Awaken: The traditional East Asian calendars divide a year into 24 solar terms. “Rain water” is the 2nd solar term and starts from February 19th. “Insects awaken” is the 3rd solar term and starts from March 5th.
