春の野に　若菜つまむと　こしものを
散りかふ花に　道は惑いぬ

若菜を摘もうと、春の野にやってきたが、
咲き乱れた桜の花が、道も分からぬほど散り交じって、迷ってしまったようだ

咲き始めの頃の桜は薄い紅色を見せてくれますが、咲き揃うにつれ花色はだんだん淡くなっていきます。そして満開を過ぎひらひらと尽きることなく散る頃には白く透けて見え、まるで雪が舞うかのようです。

この歌の「若菜つまむと」は早春のこと、「散りかふ花に」は晩春のことになります。「気が付けば、春の時は終わっていたなぁ。」と貫之のため息が聞こえてきそうです。

コロナ禍になり桜を迎えるのも三度目となり、幾度となく行動制限を繰り返しながら時は過ぎてきました。これまで一年一年、繰り返してきたことが、出来ること、出来ないことに振り分けられる日常が続いています。あらためてこの歌を読むと、また違って見えてくるものもあります。こんな時だからこそ、一日一日を大切に過ごしたいものです。

はかない桜に心を寄せるより、晩春は早く過ぎていきます。今年も散っていく桜の最後のひとひらまで愛でたいものです。

Meaning:
I came to the spring field to pick young greens.  However, the blooming cherry blossoms hid the way and I seemed to lose my way.

The cherry blossom petal is pink at the start of blooming,and it has been gradually paled out.  After full bloom, the petal changes into white, and the cherry blossoms flutter like snow.  In the poem, “wakana tsumamuto” express early spring; “Chiri kafu hana ni” express late spring.  I got the impression that Tsurayuki had signed, “Spring was over before I knew.”

This is the third time to see the cherry blossoms after the COVID-19 disaster.  Time has passed with repeated movement restrictions.  Our daily lives continue while we are forced to divide into what we can and cannot do.  When I read this poem again, there are some things that look different.  Now is the time we should make the most of each and every day.

Spring has passed before we get enough time to think about the transient cherry blossom.  I would like to cherish it until the very last petal this year, too.
