処暑のころに見え始めた秋の兆しは、白露を迎えるころには肌身に感じ取られるようになります。草木に露が降り始めますが、まだ水滴は細かく朝日に照らされて白く光って見えます。白露とは、全く言い得て妙です。

秋の訪れは嬉しくもあり心落ちつくものです。夕暮れには暑さもおさまり、過ごしやすくなっていることに気づきます。そよぐ風はまだ温かさを残していますが、それは穏やかで心地よささえ感じられます。そんな時ふと見た夕空に初月を見つけます。

仲秋は秋の半ばころの意で旧暦八月を指します。また、中秋と書くと秋の真ん中の旧暦の八月十五日を意味します。

仲秋(旧暦八月)になって初めて見る月を「初月」というようです。「初」と付けることからも一年のひとつの区切りとして大切に考えていたのでしょう。「初月」に始まり「二日月」「三日月」「夕月夜」「待宵」「名月(十五夜)」「十六夜」「立待月」「居待月」「臥待月」「更待月」「有明月」と日を追うように月に名前をつけていました。古の人たちが仲秋の「月」に寄せる思いの強さが伝わります。

満月を前に、厳しい夏を無事に越せたことに感謝し、穏やかな秋を喜ぶ心が見えてきます。

The autumn is closer around mid-August, and at the beginning of September, we can sense the autumn.  The temperature drops at night and dews fall on leaves in the morning.  The dews are sparkling white in the early morning sun.  The ancient people call around this season “white dew.”

 The coming of autumn makes me glad and calm.  The heat lets up and the weather is more comfortable in the evening.  The breeze is still warm but it is pleasant for me.  Looking up at the evening sky, I find the moon, “sho-getsu”.

 “Chu-shu (仲秋/中秋)” is mid-autumn.  “仲秋” means August on the lunar calendar, and  “中秋” is August 15th.

 The first moon after Chu-shu (仲秋) is called “sho-getsu.”  The ancient people gave names to the moon from “sho-getsu” to the next new moon: Futsuka-zuki, Mika-zuki, Yūzuki-yo, Matsu-yoi, Mei-getsu (Jugo-ya), Iza-yoi, Tachimachi-zuki, Imachi-zuki, Fushi-machi-zuki, Fuke-machi-zuki, Ariake-zuki. 

 From the names, I feel ancient people’s strong feelings toward the autumn moon.  Before the full moon, they might appreciate surviving the harsh summer safely.  Then, they welcome the autumn with joy.

*The end of heat/ white dew: The traditional East Asian calendars divide a year into 24 solar terms. “The End of Heat” is the 14th solar term and starts on August 23rd.  “White dew” is the 15th solar term and starts on September 8th.
