み山より落ちくる水の色みてぞ　秋は限りと思いしりぬる　（藤原興風）

山深いところで時雨が降って紅葉が散っているのだろう、その紅葉が流されてくるさまをみて、もう秋も終わりだと思い知った。

古の人の自然に向ける眼差しの繊細さに感心させられます。

秋澄むころになり山の彩りも鮮やかに映るようになると、山のほうが早く季節がすすむことを知っていたのでしょう。

初霜は、紛れもなく冬がそこまでやって来ているという標のようです。その朝の空気は、特に澄明で清らかさを持っているように感じます。季節の節目を知らせているかのようです。季(とき)の移ろいを感じ取る心を大切にしたいものです。

立冬を過ぎると本格的な冬はもうそこまでやってきていますが、たまに穏やかな天候に恵まれることがあります。そんな日を小春日和と言って喜びます。これから厳しい冬を越さなければいけない時に、小春日和と名付けたのも、冬の向こうにある春に対する憧憬の表れなのかも知れません。季節への思いを感じる言葉です。

時節柄、木枯らし吹き、時雨れることもあります。

Meaning: Autumn leaves might fall in the mountain because of rain.  I realized that autumn is almost over by finding the leaves in the river from the mountain.

From the poem, I was impressed by ancient’s sensitive thought toward nature.  They must have known that the seasons changed quicker in the mountain when the leaves turn their color to vivid.

When I find the first frost, I feel that the winter is just around the corner.  The crisp air in the morning makes me realize the coming of winter.  I would like to cherish the spirit of sensing the change of the seasons.

After the start of winter, it is getting cold but sometimes there are calm weather.  We called such mild days “Koharu biyori (literally, small spring days)” in Japanese.  From this word, we can know that the people in the past looked forward to coming of the spring.

Cold wintry wind might blow.  The contents might be changed depending on the

weather.

*Frost Descent/ Start of Winter: The traditional East Asian calendars divide a year into 24 solar terms. “Frost Descent” is the 18th solar term and starts on October 23rd.  “Start of Winter” is the 19th solar term and starts on November 7th.
