朝、目が覚めると外の明るさにハッとして時計を見ました。まだ目覚ましが鳴るまでには少し時間があります。ついこの間までは、朝の寒さを押して布団から這い出ても辺りは薄っすら明るい感じだったのに、もうすでに朝の光の中には麗かな春の予感があります。

「雨水」の頃になると、降り注ぐ光や吹く風にも一段と春を感じるようになります。雪降りだったお天気も雨となり、また一歩季節の歩みを実感させてくれます。雨は凍ついた大地を解かして、その潤いが地中の生き物の活動を促します。

「雨水」という言葉には、穏やかな春の日を前に季節が「静」から「動」になる喜びの思いも秘められているように感じます。

降り積もった高嶺の雪が解けたのだなあ。
清滝川の水が烈しく立てている白波は。

春になり山の雪解け水の流れが勢いよく白波を立てて流れる様を「雪しろ」ともいいます。この歌からは、西行が清滝川の雪しろを見て愛宕山の高嶺の雪解けを感じ、進む春を見てとる西行の視線の繊細さが伝わってきます。

春らしさが一層増してまいります。蛍烏賊、飯蛸、筍、若牛蒡、山菜などこの季節にしか味わえない食材が出てまいります。

I waked up in the morning before my alarm, and find that the outside is brighter than usual.  Until quite recently, it was still dark outside and too cold to get out of bed.  Now, the scent of spring hangs in the morning air.

Around “Rain water,” you can also find the feeling of spring in the sunlight and blowing wind.  The snow turns into rain, and the rainwater melts the ground.  Living things under the ground starts to move.  The seasons is changing step by step.

The seasons changes “stillness” into “motion” before a calm spring day.  The word, “Rain water,” seems to have a joy of the seasonal changes.

In the spring, the melted snow flows swiftly from the mountain and makes whitecaps.  This phenomenon calls “Yuki shiro” in Japanese.

The spring is around the corner.  We prepare the cuisine with the seasonal foods: firefly squid, ocellated octopus, bamboo shoot, young burdock, wild vegetables, and so force.  Please enjoy the arrival of spring in Kashiwaya.

*Rain Water/ Insects Awaken: The traditional East Asian calendars divide a year into 24 solar terms. “Rain Water” is the 2nd solar term and starts from February 19th. “Insects Awaken” is the 3rd solar term and starts from March 6th.
