夜空に渡る天の川を楽しみに思いますが、新暦の7月7日は、七夕と言え梅雨が明けきれず、夜空も晴れることも少ない。これは明治5年の改暦により明治5年12月3日を明治6年1月1日としたため日付が時季よりひと月ほど早くなったことに起因する。実際は満天に広がる天の川には、暫く待たなければならない。

七夕と言えば、歌川広重の名所江戸百景「市中繁栄七夕祭」が思い出されます。そこには少し高い位置から江戸の町を見たのだろう、眼下に広がる無数の屋根が描かれています。屋根より遥かに高く立てられた無数の七夕竹は、まるで競うかのように天高く突き立てられています。その向こう側、遥か遠くに望む富士山がそびえ立ち、豊かに発展した江戸を象徴するようです。その画面から賑やかな町の喧騒が聞こえてきそうです。

平安の王朝貴族たちは、七夕に五色の糸を飾り、梶の葉に願い事を書いたと言います。その後時代が下り江戸になると、七夕祭りとして庶民に笹飾りが広がりました。町衆たちは手習い事の願掛けとして五色の短冊に願いを書くようになりました。

今では七夕は真夏の行事となっていますが、昔は夏と秋の交叉(ゆきあい)の祭りとして行われていました。

柏屋の夏の料理も五色の短冊を添えて始まります。鱧や鮎など夏の味をお楽しみいただきます。

Most Japanese people look forward to seeing the Milk Way on July 7th, the day of Tanabata.  However, it is still rainy season on the day of the new calendar so it is hard to see the stars because of the clouds.  The new calendar is about one month earlier than the old one, so we must wait for a while to see the starry sky.

When it comes to Tanabata, “The city flourishing during Tanabata Festival (市中繁栄七夕祭) is famous art of the Edo period.  It is one of the series “One Hundred famous views of Edo” that is painted by Hiroshige Utagawa.  The painting is a view of the city of Edo from a slightly raised angle.  There are numerous bamboo with their wishes on paper strips above countless roofs.  In the middle of the picture, Mt. Fuji looms in the distance as if it symbolizes the developed Edo city.  The lively drawing seems likely to leak the bustle of the city.

In the Heian period (784-1185), the aristocrats were written their wishes on the leaf of paper mulberry and decorated five-colored threads on the day of Tanabata.  In the Edo period (1603-1867), the Tanabata festival entered into society, and the general public started to write their wishes on the five-colored paper ornaments.  The Tanabata was held between summer and autumn in the past, but now, it is held as a mid-summer event.

*Summer Solstice/ Slight Heat: The traditional East Asian calendars divide a year into 24 solar terms. “Summer Solstice” is the 10th solar term and starts from June 21st. “Slight Heat” is the 11th solar term and starts from July 7th.
