昼間はまだ辟易とする暑さが続きますが、処暑を過ぎれば早朝の空気に秋の訪れを感じさせるものがあります。白露ともなると一段と秋の様子をうかがうことができます。夏の厳しい頃は空を見上げることも疎ましかったのに、この頃には宵の空を見上げると気持ちも穏やかに落ち着きます。

思えば年中行事の中でも、お月見ほど静かに穏やかな気持ちで迎える行事はないように思います。厳しい夏を越し、しみじみと安堵の思いに浸ったのでしょう。

仲秋(旧暦八月)になって初めて見る月を「初月」とも言います。「初」と付けることからも一年のひとつの区切りとして捉えていたことがわかります。朔(さく)に始まり「二日月」はほとんど見えないことから「初月」と言えば「三日月」となります。そして「夕月夜」と続き、いよいよ「待宵」「名月(十五夜)」となりお月見を迎えます。その後も「十六夜」「立待月」「居待月」「臥待月」「更待月」「有明月」と日を追うように、月には名前があります。このように名残を大切にしていたことからも、古の人たちの仲秋の「月」に寄せる思いの強さが伝わってきます。

厳しい夏の季節を乗り越え、無事に十五夜を迎えられることに感謝し秋の実りをお月様に供えたのでしょう。

It is still hot in the daytime; however, after “the end of heat”, you can feel the scent of autumn in the morning.  Around “White Dew”, the autumn is just around the corner.  In the midsummer, it is hard to look up the bright sky, but around “White Dew”, the evening sky makes me feel relaxed.

By the way, the moon viewing makes me feel the most peace and calm in the all annual events in Japan.  After the strict summer has passed, the people in the old times must be relieved by viewing beautiful moon.

The first crescent moon after Chu-shu (仲秋) is called “sho-getsu (初月);” literally, it means the first moon.  Given the fact that the ancient people named it “sho (=first),” they might think the first crescent moon as the mark of the beginning of the year.  They also gave names to the every moon until the next new moon: Futsuka-zuki, Mika-zuki, Yūzuki-yo, Matsu-yoi, Mei-getsu (Jugo-ya), Iza-yoi, Tachimachi-zuki, Imachi-zuki, Fushi-machi-zuki, Fuke-machi-zuki, Ariake-zuki.  The day of Mei-getsu is the best time for the moon viewing.  From the names, I feel ancient people’s strong feelings toward the autumn moon.  They offered autumn harvest to the moon to show their gratitude for surviving the harsh summer safely.

*The end of heat/ white dew: The traditional East Asian calendars divide a year into 24 solar terms. “The End of Heat” is the 14th solar term and starts on August 23rd.  “White dew” is the 15th solar term and starts on September 8th.
