古来より日本には冬至に柚子湯をいただく習慣があります。

今年の冬至は十二月二十二日にあたります。師走も押しつまり何かと慌ただしい年の暮れ頃になりますが、この日ばかりは、湯船にゆっくりと身を沈め、たっぷりの湯に身をあずけたいものです。柚子湯の香りの中、静かに目を閉じていると小さな頃の記憶が浮かんできます。

湯船に浮かんだ黄色い柚子が珍しく、手に取ってかざしては、のぞき見たり、鼻を付けてその香りを嗅いだりしたものです。そして湯船の底で手を離して、ゆらゆらと揺れながら浮き上がってくる黄色い柚子の様子が面白く、浮かんでくるのを待って、夢中になって沈めて遊んでいました。

冬至は「一陽来復」と言って太陽が弱まっていく「陰」から再び太陽が復活する「陽」に変わること、すなわち悪いことが長く続いたあとで、ようやく良い方へ向かうことの意として喜びます。

この日を特別な日とすることは、洋の東西に関わらないようです。メソポタミヤでも冬至の頃に新年を祝う祭が行われていました。紀元前の中国でも周代には冬至節を祝っていました。北欧では冬至祭「ユール」が今でも行われています。

人の営みと自然の関係において世界共通の思いが、そこにはあるようです。

古の人がこの節目に柚子湯で身を清め新しい季節を迎えたように、コロナ禍を乗り越えた年の終わりに、希望ある明るい新年を迎えることを願うばかりです。

In Japan, from ancient times, there is a traditional custom to take a yuzu-bath on the winter solstice.  The winter solstice in 2023 is on December 22nd.  Near the end of the year, something or other will come up every day to make me busy, but I would like to relax by soaking in the bath on the winter solstice.  When I closed my eyes in the yuzu-bath, The smell of yuzu reminded me of my childhood.

Since it was new to me to see a yuzu in the bath in my childhood, I used to pick it up and sniff it.  When I released my hands from the yuzu at the bottom of  the bathtub, it was floating up from the bottom.  It was so interesting that I became absorbed in playing like that.

The winter solstice is also said that “Ichi Yo Rai Fuku(一陽来復).”  It means that fortune smiled at last after negative things continue to happen for a long time.

Regardless of region, the winter solstice was a special day in the world.  The day was also celebrated in Mesopotamia, ancient China, and Scandinavia.  It seemed that there were universal thoughts which were based on their lives and nature.

As the ancients purified themselves by taking a yuzu bath and entered the new season, I hope we have a hopeful and bright New Year after the COVID-19 pandemic.

*Heavy Snow / Winter Solstice: The traditional East Asian calendars divide a year into 24 solar terms. “ Heavy Snow” is the 21th solar term and starts from 12/7. “Winter Solstice” is the 22th solar term and starts from 12/22.
