朝の陽の光が柔らかくしっとりと感じられました。どうやら今日は雨模様。外に出ると静かに淡々と雨が降り続いていました。まだまだ寒いとはいえ、厳しい冷たさは気配をひそめたように感じられました。

二十四節気の「雨水(うすい)」は、寒さが緩みはじめ雪が雨に変わることを表しています。この頃になると季節は、ゆっくりと春へ向けて歩みを進め始めます。「雨水」の初候に「土脉潤起(つちのしょううるおいおこる)」とあります。冬に終わりを告げるかのような、しっとりとした雨に変わります。氷雪を解かし凍てつく大地を徐々に潤していきます。雪降る中、土の下で静かに春の準備をしていたものたちが、活動を始めてゆきます。潤いを取り戻した大地からは、そろそろ草木の芽が萌え出ずることでしょう。桜や楓の裸の梢も空に向けピンと張り詰め、どことなく赤味を帯びはじめます。新たな芽吹きのために力を蓄えているのでしょう。

かすがののわかなつみにやしろたえの　
そでふりはへてひとのゆくらむ

春日野へ若菜を摘みに行くのであろうか　
白妙の着物の袖をひらめかせて人がゆくのは

待ちに待った春の到来を喜び、心躍らせる人々の様子が見て取れるようです。

The morning sunlight is soft and moist.  It seems to be raining today.  When I go outside, it continues raining quietly.  It is still cold, but we passed the strict winter.

“Rain water” is when the cold lets up and the snow turns into rain.  Around this, the season slowly begins to move toward spring.  At the beginning of “rain water,” there is a saying “Tsuchi-no-shou uruoi kōru.”  It means the rain has been thawing snow and ice gradually and watering the earth, leaving the winter behind.  The living things underneath the ground sense the coming of spring and start preparing to come out to the fresh air.  You will soon see the buds sprouting out of the surface.  The bare treetops of cherry trees and maple trees are taut against the sky and begin to take on a reddish hue. They must be saving their vitality for new buds to sprout.

Kasugano no     Wakana tsumi niya     Shirotae no
Sode furi hahete     Hito no iku ramu

Meaning: Those people will seem to pick up young greens at Kasugano.
They wear white kimonos and swing their sleeves.

I can imagine that people are glad at the coming of spring from the bottom of their hearts.

*Rain Water/ Insects Awaken: The traditional East Asian calendars divide a year into 24 solar terms. “Rain water” is the 2nd solar term and starts from February 18th. “Insects awaken” is the 3rd solar term and starts from March 5th.
